Carolina Wild
is a new kid on the block when it comes to nurseries.
Owned and operated by Christi and Greg Bruner, plant collection began in
April, 2000, shortly after they
arrived in Anderson, SC. They
officially opened in the spring of 2003.
Christi and
Greg both graduation from Delaware Valley College, PA, with both majoring in
ornamental horticulture and both have had previous experiences with
horticultural retail sales. The nursery is actually in their back yard so it is
convenient for Christi to propagate, etc. while caring for their 2-year-old son,
Caleb.
I met them both
shortly after they arrived in SC at a SC Native Plant Society meeting.
I have visited their nursery and purchased butterfly
plants at SCNPS meetings. I
have been pleased with their products and their knowledge.
Their plant
list consists of approximately 60-70 herbaceous perennials with
a limited number of shrubs and vines.
Everything they carry is U.S. native and they specialize in SC native
wildflowers. They are careful about
the source of their plants/seeds. Some
plants have been obtained from rescue sights or by permission along
right-of-ways. Everything is then
nursery propagated.
Spring hours
are 1-6 Thursday and Friday; 9-6 on Saturday or by appointment.
These hours will change in June to
1-6 Thursday through Saturday.
Christi may
also be found at the Anderson Farmers’ Market on Tuesday and Thursday from 10
to 12 and on Saturday from 7 to noon. She
also has space reserved at the Greenville Farmers’ Market during the Flower
Festival, April 29-May 2.
Carolina Wild
is investigating mail order offerings but at this time, the above sources are
the only way to obtain their plants.
