KCEF Branch Library, Price Park, Greensboro, NC
The December meeting of the Triad Chapter, Carolina Butterfly Society (CBS),
was held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, 7:00 pm, at the KCEF Branch
Library, Price Park, 1420 Price Park Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410. This was
our Holiday Program, and it was a joint meeting with the NC Native Plants
Society (NCNPS), Triad Chapter. Twenty-eight people attended, eleven of whom
were CBS members.
No chapter business was conducted. Quite a few people brought party food to
share, and the munching began before the meeting was even officially called
to order. There was so much food that we were able to invite the library
staff to come in to join us.
At around 7:20 Kathy Schlosser and I opened with greetings. Kathy served as
photo organizer and projectionist for our program, which was a membersı
photo show. During the preceding month we had contacted members of both
groups to invite folks to bring photographs and other artwork of
butterflies, wildflowers, and other nature topics to share. As we learned at
our holiday program last year, we have some excellent photographers in our
groups! It was a delightful program.
One of the popular features of our holiday meeting last year was a gift
exchange, so we did it again this year. People who wished to participate
brought plants, books, and other items to pass along to others. These items
were placed on a table for all to see. After the program, Charlie Cameron
had each participant randomly draw a number from a hat and then each person
had the opportunity to select an item from the table. While this was going
on, many people returned to the food for another round of snacking.
We had an enjoyable evening of photos, food and fun. The consensus was that
having a joint holiday program was a good idea.
January Program
The January meeting of the CBS Triad Chapter will be another joint event
with the NCNPS Triad Chapter. It will be on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at
7:00 pm. The program topic will be ³Berries, Butterflies, and Birds.² Our
focus will be on native fruits that provide interest in winter after the
flowers have faded for the year, as well as providing winter foods that help
sustain birds and other wildlife through the cold months. Where do
butterflies come in? Although most butterflies are creatures of the sun and
warmth, our area has several species of butterflies that spend the winter as
adults. Weıll take a look at how they survive the winter. More details will
be emailed in a few days.
February Meeting Date Change
Because of a scheduling conflict, our February meeting will be on the first
Wednesday, Feb. 4, rather than the normal second Wednesday. Please note it
on your calendar. The program topic hasnıt been set. Suggestions are
welcome.
