Hi - The 11th annual Weymouth Count was held on Saturday June 9 under
hot dry and clear conditions - temps in the mid to upper 90's by
3:00pm. 13 folks in two - three parties covered the preserve until
noon. After lunch two parties covered The Nature Conservancy's
Quiwhiffle Tract and Slate Rd in the Sandhill Gamelands. We nearly had
more counters than total species - 23 total species for the day. I
expect diversity to be low this time of year but we usually get in the
upper 20's or low 30's.
We also saw a couple of hairstreaks that looked like Edward's but had
substantial orange over the blue spot on the hindwing. I have noticed
over the last several years individuals that appear to have
characteristics of King's and Edward's. Hybrids?
Absent were black swallowtail, palamedes swallowtail, cloudless
sulphur, variegated frittillary, pearl crescent and satyrs.
We did see lots of cool beetles, damsel and dragonflies. Several Bachman
sparrow's were singing so all in all it was a fun but hot day. Thanks to
everyone who helped.
