SUMMARY:Coastal North Carolina\, Dare County (NC)
DESCRIPTION:This full Carolina Butterfly Society 2-day field trip will be held in coastal North Carolina where we plan on visiting several different locations. Our target butterfly species varies by location and are listed below. The leaders are Harry LeGrand and Lori Arent. \nSaturday\, September 6\, 2025 – Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge – Meet at the small parking lot on the left side of Pamlico Road\, about 200 yards from US 264\, which is on the south side of the Dare County mainland (GPS coordinates 35.6132\, -75.83282). Meet at 10:00 am. This is near the southern end of the large loop of US 264\, about 7-8 miles south of Stumpy Point. Note that Pamlico Road is a single-track gravel road\, and thus parking along the road is likely impossible; even parking along or very close to US 264 might be tricky or unfeasible. \nTargets: Palatka\, Aaron’s\, Berry’s\, Yehl\, Dion\, Broad-winged\, Twin-spot\, Tawny-edged\, and Carolina Roadside skippers. \nWe will have lunch in the field. There are no restrooms here. Depending on our time and success\, whether the roadsides have been mowed\, whether coastal storms have damaged the vegetation and the road\, etc.\, we MAY make a short drive to a different site in the afternoon\, on the northern side of US 264. That site has a different set of flowers — more Mistflower instead of the dominant Bitter Sneezeweed at Pamlico Road. If the roadsides have not been mowed or otherwise impacted\, the target species are about the same; there is a higher chance (but still iffy) of Berry’s Skipper here\, but less chance for brackish marsh species like Aaron’s Skipper. Just before the end of the day\, we plan a brief stop to check the Lantanas at the Roanoke Island Visitor Center. \nSunday\, September 7\, 2025 – Various sites on the Dare County Outer Banks in the Kill Devil Hills\, Duck\, and Southern Shores areas; and perhaps also including a long drive to central mainland Currituck County – Meet at the large parking lot of Lowe’s Home Improvement\, in the corner closest to US 158 and West Landing Drive (GPS coordinates 36.02594\, -75.66886)\, in Kill Devil Hills. Meet at 9:00 am. The turn off US 158\, the main north-south highway on the Banks\, is the first major road to the west after passing the Wright Brothers National Memorial if driving from the south. If driving from the north\, Lowe’s is just before you reach the Memorial. \nTargets: Dukes’ Skipper\, Eastern Giant Swallowtail\, Brazilian Skipper. \nAt the meeting place\, we will need to review what uncommon/rare species have been recently seen in the area\, as this information will determine where we visit. We hope to find Dukes’ Skipper in the Duck area\, as a few were seen in late July or early August and have been seen there years ago as well. If missed there\, some or many folks may want to make the rather long drive to central Currituck County\, where a rather large colony of Dukes’ Skipper has been seen in September in the past few years. We expect to visit a few gardens and other plantings in the Duck area to search for the Giant Swallowtail and the rare and sporadic Brazilian Skipper\, and other species. \nLunch will presumably be in the field\, but as there are numerous fast-food restaurants along US 158\, with restrooms. Details for Sunday afternoon are wide open and will be determined by the successes of the morning. \nFor lodging\, most of you have hopefully already made motel/hotel reservations\, as this trip was announced in late winter or early spring. Certainly\, lodging on the Outer Banks\, and less so at Manteo on Roanoke Island\, is expensive in early September\, and many or most of these may well be already booked completely. \nAs stated previously\, Harry LeGrand and Lori Arent will lead. Either register on the CBS website (using the “Register” link above) or RSVP to Harry at hlegrandjr@gmail.com or Lori at ljarent1@gmail.com if you plan to participate. Please bring water\, lunch\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. Sunscreen\, bug spray\, long pants and close-toed shoes are highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Fort Macon SP\, Croatan NF\, Holly Shelter Game Land (NC)
DESCRIPTION:This full Carolina Butterfly Society 2-day field trip will be held in eastern North Carolina where we plan on visiting three different locations. Our target butterfly species varies by location and are listed below. The leader is Harry LeGrand and possibly Lori Arent. \nSaturday\, April 12\, 2025: Meet at Fort Macon State Park\, at the Coastal Education Center parking lot at the end of East Fort Macon Rd\, Atlantic Beach\, NC (GPS coordinates 34.6977\, -76.6787). Meet at 10:00 am. Target species is Crystal Skipper\, which should be easy; not many other species are present at this time of year here; Henry’s Elfin (unlikely). Probably eat lunch at the visitor center\, outside on benches. Restrooms are available inside the visitor center. (They are not available in Croatan\, so best to eat and use the restroom here.) \nAfter lunch\, we will travel to several sites in Croatan National Forest\, such as Millis Road in Carteret County\, and then much farther north to Little Road in Craven County. Millis Road and Little Road are gravel but should be fine for about all vehicles. \nTarget species are Carolina Roadside-Skipper\, Lace-winged Roadside-Skipper\, Intricate Satyr\, and Holly Azure. Little field work occurs in the forest in spring\, and few flowers are blooming then\, so we have little previous data here for April. Thus\, expectations are low but hopes are high! \nSunday\, April 13\, 2025: Holly Shelter Game Land. Meet at the eastern end of the Topsail Baptist Church parking lot\, closest to the entrance road to the game land\, on US 17 (GPS coordinates 34.4099\, -77.6571). Meet at 10:00 am. This is about 4 miles northeast of Hampstead. Note that there is another church immediately to the southwest\, on the same side (north) of the highway. Obviously\, don’t park there; park at the church lot at Topsail church where you can literally see the entrance road to the game land. As this is a Sunday\, there likely will be some churchgoers parking in the lot closer to the church anyway. \nIt may well be a bit too early and “dewy”/cool to start butterflying\, so be prepared to look for birds such as Red-cockaded Woodpecker and Bachman’s Sparrow\, and look for wildflowers and carnivorous plants\, until things warm up. We will carpool here\, as the gravel/dirt roads are usually fine for most vehicles but occasionally there are sandy places or wet spots in the road. \nTarget species (all formerly regular but now may be difficult) are Frosted Elfin\, Yucca Giant-Skipper\, Reversed Roadside-Skipper\, Dusky Roadside-Skipper. Other targets are Dusted Skipper\, Holly Azure. It might be slightly early for Little Metalmark\, which is regular by late April. We will have lunch in the field. There are no restrooms here (or in Croatan). The gate is “always” open in April but is closed from May to about Labor Day; this helps deter Venus Flytrap poaching. So\, yes\, we may well look for flytraps here\, but they won’t be in bloom. \nThere are many motels in Jacksonville\, which is a good midway point between these two trips. Of course\, people may want lodging the day before in the Morehead City or Havelock areas\, or the Wilmington area after Holly Shelter. \nAs stated previously\, Harry LeGrand will lead. Either register on the CBS website (using the “Register” link above) or RSVP to Harry at the email address below if you plan to participate. Please bring water\, lunch\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. Sunscreen\, bug spray\, long pants and close-toed shoes are highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Southern 8ths Farm & Cheraw SP (Chesterfield Co.\, SC)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 23\, 2025\, tentative plans are for Tom Austin to lead a second-day SCAN trip to a new Southern 8ths property from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Brad Turley\, the Southern 8ths Farm owner\, is in the process of buying land in Chesterfield County\, adjacent to Cheraw State Park\, located roughly at GPS coordinates 34.6604\, -79.8907. He is interested in getting some eyes on that property while we’re in the area. A specific meeting location will be provided later. \nAfterwards\, those who wish can head over to Cheraw State Park in Patrick\, SC on Society Hill Road.  The GPS coordinates for the meeting location are 34.6196\, -79.9452. The target species are Brown Elfin\, Henry’s Elfin\, Hessel’s Hairstreak and Great Purple Hairstreak. There is also an option\, if time permits and there is interest\, to go to Carolina Sandhills NWR to look for Frosted Elfin. Walking is off trail and easy. \nThere are no restroom facilities. Tom Austin will lead the Southern 8ths walk and Dave and Marty Kastner will lead the Cheraw State Park walk and\, if we go\, Carolina Sandhills NWR walk. Either register on the CBS website (using the “Register” link above) or RSVP to Tom or Marty at one of the email addresses below if you plan to participate. Please bring water\, lunch\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. For any of these walks\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, long pants and close-toed shoes are highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Southern 8ths Farm (Chesterfield\, SC)
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 22\, 2025\, there will be a joint field trip between CBS (Carolina Butterfly Society) and SCAN (South Carolina Association of Naturalists). The trip leader for both groups will be Tom Austin\, President of CBS and Database Manager for SCAN\, and staff from Southern 8ths Farm. Southern 8ths Farm staff will escort us throughout the property. Southern 8ths Farm is a private conservation property and the home of the Carolina Wildlands Foundation. Southern 8ths Farm is located on the SC/NC border primarily in Chesterfield County\, SC with a portion of the property extending into Anson County\, NC. The property sits on Thompson Creek in an ecoregional and geological boundary straddling the fall line just above the Sandhills. This unique geology has birthed a rich diversity of native plant communities and Coastal Wildlands Foundation has done extensive work to restore prairie habitat across the property. CBS is working with Southern 8ths Farm to help them create an introductory field guide on their butterfly diversity for their outreach and education programs. \nTarget Species include: Common Sootywing\, Falcate Orangetip\, Orange Sulphur\, Clouded Sulphur\, Harvester\, and Southern Skipperling. CBS is working with Southern 8ths Farm to catalogue and document as many butterfly species as we can on the property. So\, an emphasis for the day will be placed on adding news species to the site’s biodiversity list in addition to surveys for target species. \nLearn More about Southern 8ths Farm and the Carolina Wildlands Foundation at the website listed below. A video about Thompson Creek and the geology of the region can be viewed at: https://vimeo.com/1002041941 \nThere are restrooms on site. On-site camping is permitted. There are 10 RV pads available on site with power hook-ups (no wastewater) and the ability for on-site camping. There are two guest rooms available at Southern 8ths Farm\, which can be rented for $149/night. (Contact Southern 8ths Farm directly to reserve.) The nearest hotels are 20-30 miles away in Cheraw SC\, Rockingham NC\, and Monroe NC. \nAs previously stated\, Tom Austin will lead. Either register on the CBS website (using the “Register” link above) or RSVP to Tom at the email address below if you plan to participate. Please bring water\, lunch\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. Sunscreen\, bug spray\, long pants and close-toed shoes are highly recommended. \n Participants will need to sign a waiver with Carolina Wildlands Foundation in order to participate.

SUMMARY:Bio Way Farm & Tall Pines WMA (Ware Shoals & Cleveland\, SC)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday September 21\, 2024 – Bio Way Farm \nWe will meet at Bio Way Farm at 9:00 AM and explore until around 3:00 PM. The address is 197 Bio Way\, Ware Shoals\, SC 29692 (or GPS coordinates 34.46988\, -82.25832). The GPS coordinates for the driveway entrance on Bio Way are 34.47029\, -82.25867. \nWe will walk the roads and trails of a 120-acre organic farm that is managed for ecological restoration and biodiversity. There is a mix of upland meadows and forest habitat as well as a 5-acre lake and riparian zones to explore. Walking difficulty level is easy to moderate. There is a restroom and drinking water at our meeting location. Gas and food are nearby. There is no cost. \nAdditional information about Bio Way Farm can be found at: https://www.biowayfarm.com \nSunday September 22\, 2024 – Tall Pines WMA (Wildlife Management Area) \nWe will meet at the parking area at 10:00 AM and explore until around 3:00 PM. The address is 556-638 Moody Bridge Rd\, Cleveland\, SC 29635 (or GPS coordinates 35.06417\, -82.56880). \nTall Pines WMA is a 1\,757-acre SCDNR property. We will walk the gated roads which contain a mix of habitats. There is also a SC Native Plant Society owned site nearby which we will have the option to explore. Walking difficulty level should be easy to moderate but some recent reviews state that the trails are not well marked and\, in some cases\, overgrown and with trees down. There does not appear to be a restroom onsite. Gas and food are nearby. There is no cost. \nAdditional information about Tall Pines WMA can be found at: https://www2.dnr.sc.gov/managedlands/managedland/managedland/766 or https://www.dnr.sc.gov/news/2019/feb/feb15_tallpines.php \nTarget Species – Over 30 species have been identified at Bio Way Farm with many more possibilities to be discovered. Laurens County is an under sampled area of South Carolina so\, while at Bio Way Farm\, perhaps we can fill in some of the species “holes” on the range maps. Use the link below to access the Bio Way iNaturalist page to view past sightings. Possible butterflies at Tall Pines WMA in Greenville County are the Diana Fritillary and other Piedmont and Mountain species. \nhttps://www.inaturalist.org/projects/bio-way-farm-ware-shoals-sc \nIt is recommended that you bring additional snacks\, food\, and beverages as during the walks we will be away from public facilities. Wearing sturdy walking or hiking shoes is recommended along with long sleeves and pants as we may go off trail in some locations to look for as many butterfly species as possible. It is also recommended you use a good bug spray\, wear sunscreen\, and carry water with you. Be sure to bring those other items you may need (camera\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.). \nThere are many accommodation options in the Greenville\, SC area\, which is located about midway between the 2 locations we will be exploring. For reference\, Bio Way Farm in Laurens County is about 45 to 50 minutes to the south of central Greenville whereas Tall Pines WMA in Greenville County is about 40 to 45 minutes to the north of central Greenville. \nChris Sermons\, who can be reached at the email address listed below\, is the leader for these field trips. Please either contact Chris or register on the CBS website if you plan on attending.

SUMMARY:Southern 8ths Farm (Chesterfield\, SC)
DESCRIPTION:This is a full CBS field trip that will be to a new location for us in northeast South Carolina\, almost to the state line with North Carolina. We will meet our host\, Brad Turley\, at the GPS coordinates listed below at 9:00 AM. \nSouthern 8ths is located in an area of convergence\, where the Piedmont & Coastal Plain meet along the state line of North and South Carolina. This land is rich in American and natural history and has a history of horses being present since the late 18th century. The geophysical nature of these 1\,400 acres of preserved land has encouraged the growth of rolling pastures and fields\, diverse upland and bottom land hardwood forests and planted pine stands. The waters of Thompson Creek and its tributaries drop over shale bases to join the Great Pee Dee River and flow to the Atlantic. This land is home to reclaimed grass prairies full of insects and dappled sunlit woodland trails\, offering respite to birds\, mammals\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and humans. This “corridor of green” is a work-in-progress\, and it is teaching us about its future role in the survival of humankind and animal-kind. Per Tom Austin\, the organizer for this trip\, and referring to the map below\, the proposed “schedule” is as follows: \n9:00 – 9:30 AM\nMeet at the Learning Center (GPS coordinates 34.79584\, -80.15313)\, located behind the horse barns at 305 Lucious Davis Road for welcome\, introductions\, to use restrooms and fill up on water. On the map\, this is the reddish area between Points 5 and 2. The driveway entrance to the property is located at GPS Coordinates 34.79965\, -80.15423 on the south side of Lucious Davis Road. \n9:30 – 10:30 AM\nHead out via carpool to the Fireworks East/West and Red Banks Prairies\, our two most diverse Southeastern grasslands. They total over 15 acres and include a pond and some woods and should be loaded with butterflies. Folks will have plenty to explore there\, and some shade if they need it. This is the cleared area around Point 1 on the map. \n10:30 to 12 noon\nWalk along a wooded trail through mixed upland hardwoods and pines\, cross a small creek\, and head to Frances’ Field\, a smaller prairie with thinner\, drier soils and lots of natives\, and then to BJ’s Pond\, a mature wooded pond with some sunnier openings. The walk is west of Point 1 to the small prairie\, pond and back. \n12:30 – 1:30 PM\nCarpool back to cool off at the Learning Center for a brown-bag lunch-and-learn orientation / PowerPoint about Carolina Wildlands. \n1:30 – 3:00 PM\nIf people are up for it\, we could walk from the Learning Center on trails in the shadier alluvial forest along Thompson Creek\, passing several managed grasslands\, before heading home. This is the floodplain area west of Point 2 on the map. \nNoted nectar plants: Mountain Mint\, Wild Bergamot\, Roughleaf Sunflower\, Blazing Star\, Common Milkweed\, Butterfly Weed\, Brazilian Vervain\, Ironweeds\, Maryland Golden Aster\, Cottony Goldenaster\, Common Yellow Thistle\, Bull Thistle\, Late Boneset\, Blue Lobelia\, Black Eyed Susan\, and 7 species of Goldenrod. (I think we’ll be transitioning between the bloom times of most of these.) \nI think this walk is going to be nectar driven from what I recall about the property from late fall and the season. Sounds like we’ll be looking for Vervains\, Mountain-Mint\, and any Sunflowers and Blazing-stars coming into bloom. Should be Ironweed and Lobelia in the wetter areas too. Hopefully there’s some Prunella around too. \nIt is recommended that you bring additional snacks\, food\, and beverages as during the walks we will be away from public facilities. Wearing sturdy walking or hiking shoes is recommended along with long sleeves and pants as we may go off trail in some locations to look for as many butterfly species as possible. It is also recommended you use a good bug spray\, wear sunscreen\, and carry water with you. Be sure to bring those items you may need (camera\, binoculars\, field guides\, etc.). \nThe closest cities to Southern 8ths Farm that have a selection of accommodations are 1) Cheraw\, SC\, about a 30 minute drive and 2) Rockingham\, NC\, about a 40 minute drive. \nTom Austin\, who can be reached at the email address listed below\, made the arrangements for this field trip. Please either contact Tom or register on the CBS website if you plan on attending.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Western North Carolina - Duskywings\, Elfins\, Hairstreaks
DESCRIPTION:Due to the forecast for rainy weather all weekend\, this trip has been CANCELLED. \nThis full CBS 2-day field trip will be held in western North Carolina where we will visit two different locations. Our target species will be Duskywings\, Elfins\, Hairstreaks\, Cobweb Skipper and\, if we’re lucky\, possibly a “late” Olympia Marble. Pete Dixon will be our leader on both days. \nThe first day will be spent hiking on River Road and Polecat Hollow along the French Broad River outside of Hot Springs\, NC. The meeting location is Broadwing Farm\, 20 Berry Wills Road\, Hot Springs\, NC at 10:00 am. Park in front of the “event venue” building that’s located at 165 Broadwing Farm Lane\, Hot Springs\, NC (GPS coordinates 35.9008\, -82.8291). Use the following link https://www.broadwingfarmcabins.com/the-farm/directions/ for additional information and specific directions from nearby cities. Hiking level is easy and there are restrooms a short distance away. \nThe second day will be spent visiting sites in the Sandy Mush Game Lands which has a diversity of early successional and managed grassland habitats and creek bottoms. The meeting location is the parking lot on Bear Creek Road near Marshall\, NC at 10:00 am. There is no specific street address\, but the parking lot entrance (GPS coordinates 35.7271\, -82.7010) is located about 150 feet southwest of 2717 Bear Creek Road\, Marshall\, NC. The following Google Maps link https://maps.app.goo.gl/crkdKUBGcAwrNuXe9/ can also be used to view the parking lot location. Hiking trails are easy but there are some hills. Restrooms are not available. \nFor places to stay overnight\, there are several rental cabins and B&Bs in the county and nearby. Mars Hill has a Comfort Inn\, and there is a Fairfield Inn in Weaverville (Buncombe County). For something unusual\, the old jail in Marshall is now a boutique hotel. Hot Springs has many short-term rental properties. Mars Hill\, Marshall\, Hot Springs\, and Weaverville each have a variety of restaurants and brewery taprooms. Weaverville is about 40 minutes from Broadwing Farm; Marshall is about 25 minutes; Mars Hill is about 35 minutes. Hot Springs is about 5 minutes away. Obviously\, there are many hotels and restaurants in Asheville\, which would be another 10 to 30 minutes\, depending on what area of Asheville you are in. If you want to try Hot Springs\, check with Mary Helen Adamson for lodging at 828-206-7010 or visit the website at https://hotspringsnc.org/. \nAs indicated above\, Pete Dixon\, who can be reached at the email address listed below\, is the leader for these field trips.

Our local Asheville-area butterflying group will take you to our hotspots for Silvery Blues\, Cobweb Skippers\, Mottled Duskywings\, Olympia Marbles\, Hairstreaks\, Elfins\, and many others. \nSunday\, April 14\, we will cover some of the Sandy Mush Game Lands in Buncombe County. On Monday\, April 15\, we will be in the Hot Springs area of Madison County. Total species seen should be about 40. \nBe aware that we will walk about 4 miles in Sandy Mush. Both Bear Creek and Cedar Hill areas are hilly and a mile in and a mile back out. We drive between gated areas. It can be very muddy. Hiking poles recommended. All areas of Hot Springs are mostly flat on dirt roads and in meadows. \nOf course\, weather is very dicey this time of year. By Thursday\, April 11\, I should know if the trip needs postponing due to rain. Rain dates will be two consecutive days between April 15 and 19\, chosen by the best forecast. \nIf we are able to keep the dates of April 14/15\, anyone wanting to drive up Saturday may find some butterfly action on the Blue Ridge Parkway or around the NC Arboretum. Sandy Mush is 20 – 35 min. from exit 19 off I-26 west in Weaverville\, our morning meeting place for those staying nearby; Hot Springs is 45 min. from Weaverville. There is a Days Inn at exit 23 off I-26. There are also B&Bs in both Weaverville and Hot Springs. Pete Dixon has cabins for rent on his farm\, which is one of our sites to visit in Hot Springs. I can send further info to anyone interested. \nPlease contact Gail Lankford (see below) if you have questions\, or to sign up for the outing. I will need to know who to expect by April 10. There will be an agreement to sign for this trip. You must agree to never collect or harm any species at any site we visit\, and agree that you will not reveal the specific sites containing the Cobweb Skippers or the small population of Olympia Marbles to anyone in the future. \nGail Lankford\nwhocooksforyou64@gmail.com\, 828-645-4690 (land line; no text)

SUMMARY:Sunday - Southwestern Mountains of NC
DESCRIPTION:Meeting place and time: At a paved parking area along the southeast side of US 64\, about 0.2-mile mile east of where the Appalachian Trail crosses the highway. This parking area is located perhaps 5 miles west of where Wayah Road meets US 64. We will meet at 10:00 AM on Sunday\, May 13.\nButterflying locations include various sites west of the meeting place\, such as the Wasilik Poplar area\, possibly Wayah and Wind Spring Balds. Definitely the Buck Creek area in eastern Clay County; this area will be our main focus.\nTargets: Tawny Crescent (should see)\, Gorgone Checkerspot (rare and not likely\, but at least was formerly at a site where we will visit)\, Dusted Skipper\, Indian Skipper (perhaps a tad early)\, Northern Crescent\, Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail\, Dusky Azure and Silvery Blue (maybe a tad late for them)\, West Virginia White\, Appalachian Azure\, Pepper and Salt Skipper. Lots of very rare possibilities (as if we will see a Gray Comma\, Green Comma\, Early Hairstreak\, or Golden Banded-Skipper!)\nThere are many motels in Franklin. However\, rates will not be inexpensive\, as May is semi-high season\, and of course we will be here on a weekend.
