DESCRIPTION:CLOSED – We have had an overwhelming response to this year’s symposium and must close registrations due to resource limitations.\nThis is a post-symposium butterfly walk but anyone is welcome whether they plan on attending the symposium or not. \nWe will meet at the Jordan Lake Tailrace. The address is 2060 Jordan Dam Road\, Moncure\, NC 27559 (or GPS coordinates 35.65231\, -79.06748). We will walk around the fields and outflow area to look for butterflies. Going will be slow\, with level to moderate terrain\, some mowed field edges or walking through grassy fields. Be prepared for some exploring. Brian Bockhahn will lead. \nRestrooms are available on the property. Please bring water\, lunch\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. Sunscreen\, bug spray\, a hat\, long pants and close-toed shoes are highly recommended. \nAfter 45 minutes or so\, we’ll drive 3 miles\, about 6 minutes away\, to a relatively new section of Deep River State Natural Area. This area has not been visited much\, so we really don’t know what to expect; most sightings will be new for the property. The trailhead is behind the Moncure Community Health Center. The address is 7228 Moncure Pittsboro Road\, Moncure\, NC 27559 (or GPS coordinates 35.63146\, -79.09675). We will hike a series of old roads\, first through a recently logged area\, around an old home site and pond\, then down into the rich floodplain and an old rock quarry along the Deep River. DESCRIPTION:Date:  Sunday\, March 29\, 2026 \nLocation:  Cheraw State Park & Sandhills State Forest / Horseshoe Mountain\, Patrick\, SC \n\nMeeting Time:  10:30 am\nMeeting Spot:  Meet on Society Hill Road (sometimes called Teals Mill Rd) in Cheraw SP. This is off Hwy 1 in Patrick\, SC. We will park on the side of the road just past Juniper Creek. The GPS coordinates are near 34.6214\, -79.9451.\n\nDescription: At Society Hill Road\, we will explore the sand myrtle\, vaccinium\, horse sugar trees\, and Atlantic white cedar on both sides of the road.  When finished we will drive approximately 25 minutes west to Sandhills State Forest to explore Horseshoe Mountain. The GPS coordinates for parking at Horseshoe Mountain are 34.5896\, -80.1170. \nTarget Species: Hessel’s Hairstreak\, Brown Elfin\, Henry’s Elfin\, Eastern Pine Elfin\, Great Purple Hairstreak\, Holly Azure \nNotes:  No restrooms are available at our first stop. There is a pit toilet near Horseshoe Mountain\, but it is sometimes locked. Bring a portable lunch to eat either at our first stop or the second one depending on the timing. There are no tables for lunch at either site. Please bring water\, binoculars\, cameras and field guides. DESCRIPTION:Dates:  Saturday\, August 29 and Sunday\, August 30\, 2026 \nLocation:  Francis Marion National Forest\, McClellanville (NE of Charleston)\, SC \n\nMeeting Time (both days):  9:30 am – to 4:00 pm (approximate)\nMeeting Spot (both days):  Honey Hill Recreation Area\, beside the fire tower (GPS coordinates 33.1741\, -79.5616). The fire tower is just to the southeast of 3533 French Santee Road\, Jamestown\, SC.\n\nDescription: You can attend just one or both days \n\nSaturday. August 29\, 2026 – We will head out north on SC-45\, turn right onto Old Oakhill Rd\, and proceed to our first stop on the powerline right-of-way to look for Georgia Satyrs and various skippers. We’ll then proceed north and turn right onto Echaw Rd (FR-204). We’ll stay on FR-204 for all of the morning\, stopping where feasible to inspect nectar sources and varying habitats for other target species\, such as Dusky Roadside-Skipper and Ceraunus Blue. (As time and group desire permits\, we can take a brief detour to FR-204C to search for Intricate Satyrs\, both Checkered-Skippers\, and Zebra Longwings.) We then turn onto FR-212 for the remainder of the day to search for other targets\, particularly Little Metalmark. FR-212 will terminate back onto SC-45. We can disperse back to our lodging or head to a dinner locale of the group’s choosing from here.\nSunday\, August 30\, 2026 – We will head out north on SC-45\, turn left onto Halfway Creek Road\, and proceed roughly 3.2 miles to a right turn under the powerline for the informal parking area for Florida Bay. Here we’ll spend the first half of the morning looking for Georgia Satyrs\, Common Wood-Nymphs\, and various skippers. We’ll then return to Halfway Creek Road and head west to a right turn onto Farewell Corner Road A. We’ll stop at the head of the road to search for Little Metalmark and Dusky Roadside-Skippers. We’ll then continue to explore Farewell Corner Road A\, as well as heading east down Conifer Road\, Conifer Road B\, and Yellow Jacket Road for target species. Once we reach the paved Shulerville Road\, we’ll turn right and proceed to Halfway Creek Road\, where we’ll cross over onto the unpaved Victor Lincoln Road. While on Victor Lincoln Road\, we’ll search for Seminole [Texan] Crescents\, Intricate Satyrs\, and various wetland Skippers. If time permits\, we’ll visit FR-212 again to look for anything we missed the day prior and to close out the day.\n\nTarget Species: Little Metalmark\, Ceraunus Blue\, Zebra Longwing\, Seminole [Texan] Crescent\, Intricate Satyr\, Georgia Satyr\, Common Wood-Nymph\, White Checkered-Skipper\, Tropical Checkered-Skipper\, Byssus Skipper\, Twinspot Skipper\, Yehl Skipper\, and Dusky Roadside-Skipper \nNotes: There are no restrooms in the Francis Marion National Forest. The nearest facilities are the gas station in Jamestown\, SC. Bring your lunch and plenty of water for the day. Please dress and be prepared for mosquitoes\, extreme humidity\, and high heat. We’ll mainly be butterflying on rural dirt roads\, which develop significantly sized potholes from time to time\, so a high ground clearance vehicle is advised. Many of these public dirt roads traverse through swamps and can become quite narrow with no shoulders on these causeways\, so roadside parking will be at times limited and carpooling is advised if possible. DESCRIPTION:Dates:  Saturday\, September 26 and Sunday\, September 27\, 2026 \nLocation:  Sandhills Game Land – Moore\, Richmond and Scotland Counties\, NC \n\nMeeting Time (both days):  9:30 am – to 4:00 pm (approximate)\nMeeting Spot: See information below by specific date\n\nGeneral Information: The scenic Sandhills Game Land encompasses 63\,061 acres across Hoke\, Moore\, Richmond\, and Scotland counties in North Carolina\, with 32\,235 acres being in Richmond County. The Game Land is one of the largest remaining examples of a Longleaf Pine ecosystem in North Carolina. There is approximately 6700 acres of Oak/Hickory dominant forestland on the Game Land. \nSaturday\, September 26\nMeeting Spot: Sandhills Horticultural Gardens; along Airport Road north of Southern Pines\, about 400-500 yards west of the intersection with Central Drive (NC 22)\, on the south side of Airport Road; meet in the parking lot to the left of the building. GPS coordinates for the parking lot are 35.2244\, -79.4050. \nDescription: We will cover the plantings at the gardens for maybe an hour. We will then head south to southern Moore and Richmond counties\, working along the dirt Thunder Road (southern Moore County)\, then on to McKinney Fish Hatchery\, and then Bagget Lane. \nSunday\, September 27\nMeeting Spot: The parking area at Broadacres Lake\, at the east end of the lake by the dam; location is along Butler Road. Turn off US 1 in Hoffman onto School Road\, and follow this road to its end at Butler Road\, turn left and the lake is about 500 yards on your right.  Please use Google Maps or a GPS\, as the road names on signs along US 1 and in Hoffman might not match this description\, or might not be visible. Make sure the map shows the name of Broadacres Lake! GPS coordinates for the parking area are 35.0166\, -79.5446. \nDescription: We will briefly cover the lake near the dam\, including for dragonflies and damselflies. We then head south into the Scotland County portion of the Game Land\, better for Dotted and Meske’s skippers\, including working along the Scotland Lane annual burn area with its seeps. We will also spend some time at a paratrooper drop zone for open country species and then work at Scotland Lake. We may need to drive around to find places with lots of purple/pink flowers on BOTH days\, as the seeps and pond margins are usually not good for butterflies in the fall season. \nTarget Species: Dotted Skipper\, Meske’s Skipper\, Southern Skipperling\, Whirlabout\, Long-tailed Skipper\, and perhaps other southern migrants. On both days\, we will look at and try to identify dragonflies and damselflies\, reptiles and amphibians\, birds\, noteworthy plants\, and other Sandhills flora and fauna of interest. We will treat these two days as somewhat corresponding to South Carolina’s excellent SCAN (South Carolina Association of Naturalists) outings\, for which North Carolina (sadly) has no similar statewide naturalist outings\, except for the (NC) Sandhills Natural History Society outings\, which cover just the North Carolina Sandhills region that we will be covering on this trip. \nNotes:  Please bring snacks or lunches to be eaten in the field. The Sandhills Game Land has no restrooms or other facilities. There should be restrooms in the visitor center at the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. There are also restrooms at one or two convenience stores along US 1 just south of Hoffman\, where Caddell Road intersects; their use would mainly be prior to meeting at Broadacres Lake\, on your own. You should wear long pants\, as though most of the time we will be walking on trails at the Horticultural Gardens and on dirt roads at the Game Land\, we likely will walk along the shoreline of a few lakes (if looking for odonates) and certainly through open Sandhills vegetation away from roads when searching for pink or purple flowers for nectaring skippers. It never hurts to bring bug spray\, sunscreen\, water and/or sports drinks\, and hats with wide brims. We should carpool and use 4-wheel drive vehicles for certain portions of the game land\, as roads can be sandy in places\, or less often muddy in places. No one wants to get stuck on a field trip\, something we have done on more than one occasion!
