SUMMARY:Harriet McCarthy's Home Butterfly Garden (Forsyth County\, NC)
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14\, 2022\, the Triad Chapter of CBS (Carolina Butterfly Society) will hold a butterfly walk at Harriet McCarthy’s home butterfly garden in Forsyth County\, which has been certified as a Monarch Waystation. The whole property is beautifully landscaped. Harriet\, who is a Master Gardener\, has planted her property extensively with native species (as well as some non-native plants) to provide host plants for butterfly caterpillars and nectar for adult butterflies and other pollinators. Most of the mature plantings are in her back garden. In addition\, she has a flowerbed at the base of the lawn in front of her home with one end set aside for shade-loving plants under the cover of mature trees. \nIf you would like to attend\, please contact Harriet McCarthy at the email address below to RSVP and obtain her address (which\, for privacy and security concerns\, is not published here).

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Mecklenburg County\, NC Dusted Skipper Blitz
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED\nThis walk has been cancelled because 3 of the 4 areas we planned to search have been burned and there is no grass around. This walk may be rescheduled for 2023 or 2024. \n========== \nJoin us on May 7\, 2022\, in search of the elusive Dusted Skipper. This skipper seems to be rapidly declining throughout the Carolinas and is currently only known in Mecklenburg County\, North Carolina\, from one powerline right-of-way. \nWe will meet up at Latta Nature Preserve at 10:00 in the Gar Creek Canoe Access parking lot\, GPS coordinates 35.34968\, -80.92404\, to explore a once-reliable location for this skipper. Depending on the size of our group\, we may split up into smaller groups to take advantage of extra eyes and search as many suitable locations for Dusted Skippers as we can. This outing aims to attempt to locate additional populations of the beautiful single brooded species. Refer to the website below for a map and additional information about Latta Nature Preserve. \nIf you plan on attending\, please RSVP on the Carolina Butterfly Society website or email Robert Gilson at robert.gilson@faunaventures.com. \nThis trip will be co-led by Robert Gilson and Chris Talkington. Make sure to bring plenty of water\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, a hat\, binoculars\, a camera\, and your favorite field guide.

SUMMARY:Waterfowl Impoundment Areas in NC
DESCRIPTION:This trip was previously scheduled on Saturday\, August 7.\nOn Sunday\, August 29\, we hope to explore the Flat River Waterfowl Impoundment (5094 Old Oxford Road\, Durham\, NC 27712) from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and\, time permitting and the heat situation\, the Brickhouse Road Waterfowl Impoundments (5416 Brickhouse Road\, Bahama\, NC 27503) after 12:00 pm. These beautiful natural areas are located close together and are highly recommended by Harry LeGrand and Brian Bockhahn as some of the best sites in the Triangle for seeing butterflies. \nPlease bring your binoculars\, camera\, field guides\, lunch\, snacks and water. Be prepared to use the “green latrine” because these locations are out in the boondocks and bathroom facilities are not available. Masks are NOT required for this field trip and participants can decide how much “social distance” they feel comfortable with\, (including at the meeting site for the Sunday field trip). Those interested in attending should contact Marti Kane and let her know that you plan on coming this event. \nEveryone is being asked to meet in the parking area for the Flat River Waterfowl Impoundment at 9:00 am. The parking area is located on the Old Oxford Road between the turn off for Horton Grove NP (Jock Road) and the turn off for the Brickhouse Road Waterfowl Impoundments. The parking lot is large so it should be an adequate meeting spot. For those who use GPS\, the coordinates are 36.1278\, -78.832815. \nPlease contact Marti Kane for more details.

We hope to postpone it to a later date. \nWe have been keeping an eye on the status of COVID-19 in the Triad. New cases are rising dramatically. If we are going to ere\, we want to do so in favor of the health and safety of our members and guests. Some of these folks have other health issues to consider\, as well. Consequently\, we have made the difficult decision to not meet as a group at the home of Pat & Gene Holder this coming Saturday. Pat invites anyone who would like to see the Holder native plant butterfly garden individually to contact her at <pat.holder@icloud.com> to arrange a date and time. \n— Original Information Below — \nPat Holder is looking forward to having members of the Carolina Butterfly Society\nvisit their garden on Saturday\, July 31\, 2021 at 9:30 am. Pat’s address is: \n1895 Lake Country Dr. Ext.\nAsheboro\, NC 27205 \nWebkeepers Note – For those who use GPS\, I believe the coordinates for the entrance to Pat’s driveway are 35.747880\, -79.848766 \nThere will be safe parking on the side of the country road as well as a little parking in their driveway. Pat is seeing more and more butterflies\, still not a huge number\, and lots of bees and dragonflies. At the moment the garden is full of blooms\, and as the Bee Balm fades\, more Black-eyed Susans are popping open. It should be lovely\, but warm. \nPat will be out of town until Tuesday\, July 27 and will have access to email in case there are questions. Visitors should email Pat at the following address to let her know they are coming. \npat.holder@icloud.com

SUMMARY:Carolina Sandhills NWR\, Cheraw SP and Horseshoe Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The first walk for the CBS Midlands Chapter will be on April 3. We will visit Cheraw State Park and Horseshoe Mountain. Due to a recent controlled burn and lack of nectar\, we will NOT explore Carolina Sandhills NWR; we will only meet there in the parking lot at 10:00 (which\, due to the expected cool temperature\, is later than the original time of 9:30 ). The main entrance is on US Highway 1\, about 4 miles northeast of McBee\, SC.  The address is 23734 U.S. Highway 1\, McBee\, SC 29101. We will caravan to Cheraw SP and then to Horseshoe Mountain. \nPlease note that masks and social distancing are mandated on all federal lands (Sandhills) and masks are only required in areas where people congregate at Cheraw SP. If you want to explore the Carolina Sandhills NWR\, a youth turkey hunt is taking place on this date and our permit limits us to either side of Wildlife Drive from Hwy 1 to RT 9. Please bring an orange hat or vest to wear in the NWR other than the parking lot. \nPlease note that the area at Cheraw SP is not a trail and we will be walking on uneven ground covered with pine needles and some vegetation. Also\, at Horseshoe Mountain there is a walk with some steps to get up to the top. The high temperature is only supposed to be 59 on Saturday\, but we did see butterflies while scouting when it was only 55 degrees. It is supposed to be sunny. \nAs before we will practice social distancing as much as possible during the walk. Be sure to bring your mask since the area will be more crowded on a holiday weekend. Bathrooms are available at Horseshoe Mountain. \nThe target species are Henry’s Elfin\, Brown Elfin\, Frosted Elfin and Hessel’s Hairstreak. Please bring your binoculars\, camera\, field guides\, lunch\, snacks and water. We will end around 3:00. Marty and Dave Kastner will lead the walk. Please sign up on the CBS website or contact Marty and Dave if you plan to attend. kastners@aol.com
