DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED\nDue to extensive flooding and a lack of nectar sources in the James W. Webb WMA\, this trip has been CANCELLED. We will instead explore the Timmerman Trail in Cayce\, South Carolina on this same date. Please refer to the Timmerman Trail event entry for details. \nThe Carolina Butterfly Society’s first field trips of the 2020 season will be held on March 21 and 22 in Hampton County\, SC.  There are three Wildlife Management Areas adjacent to each other for us to investigate. \nOn Saturday\, March 21\, we will go to the James W. Webb WMA from 10:30-4:00.  The entrance to the center is 2.7 miles from Garnett off Augusta Stagecoach Road (more complete directions are below).  We will meet at the office.  Last year at this time we saw 25+ species at Webb including the Seminole Texan Crescent.  Marty and Dave Kastner will lead this part of the walk. \nOn Sunday\, March 22\, we will explore Palachucola WMA and/or Hamilton Ridge WMA from 10:30-4:00 or until you need to leave.  Please meet at the intersection of Orangeburg Road and Augusta Stagecoach Road.  Alison Smith and Tom Austin will lead this walk. \nIf you would like to stay overnight\, the closest hotels are in Ridgeland\, SC which is about 30 minutes from Webb WMA. \nPlease let us know if you are coming in case plans change.  You may sign up on the CBS website or email Marty at kastners@aol.com.  Bring your camera\, binoculars\, field guide\, lunch\, snacks\, water and bug spray.  Long pants and close toed shoes are recommended.  We will be driving to several locations and getting out to look around.  Walking level is easy.  There are no restrooms. \nDirections to James W. Webb WMA Office – Address: 1282 Webb Avenue\, Garnett\, SC 29922 GPS Coordinates: Latitude = 32.608860\, Longitude = -81.301580 \n\nFrom Columbia – Take Highway 321 South to Garnett.  In Garnett the road will fork. Stay right on HWY 119.  Turn right onto Augusta Stagecoach Road (S-20)\, cross the railroad tracks and go approximately 2.6 miles.  Webb WMA entrance is on the left.  Follow Webb Avenue 1.5 miles to the office.\nFrom I-95 – Take exit 21 for SC 336 towards Ridgeland.  Turn right onto SC 336 and right onto US 321 N.  Turn left onto Augusta Stage Road and follow it to the Webb WMA entrance on the left.  Follow Webb Avenue 1.5 miles to the office.\nFrom Aiken – Take Old Barnwell Rd\, US-278 E\, 7 Pines Rd\, Patterson Mill Rd\, … and SC-3 to County Rd S-25-19/Orangeburg Rd in Hampton County.  Turn left onto Augusta Stagecoach Road and right onto Webb Avenue and follow it 1.5 miles to the office.

DESCRIPTION:This is a joint trip with SCAN (South Carolina Association of Naturalists). The address is 725 Cannon Bridge Road\, Orangeburg\, SC 29115. Come in the second entrance after crossing the railroad tracks coming from Hwy. 301. Look to your right and go towards the tree line. We will line our cars up near the tree line. When everyone is there\, Arthur Sweatman from the SI Group will lead the caravan of cars to the Hundred Acre Woods. Dave Kastner is our trip organizer. The target species is the Goatweed Leafwing and other fall butterflies. There is a porta potty on site. Restaurants and gas stations are nearby. DESCRIPTION:This is a very rare opportunity to butterfly on Parris Island.\nThe walk will be LIMITED TO THE FIRST 10 PEOPLE who sign up by September 9 either on the CBS website or by contacting Marty Kastner at kastners@aol.com. When you register\, you will need to PROVIDE YOUR fULL NAME AND DATE OF BIRTH. This information will be given to John Holloway (our trip leader and the natural resources person for Parris Island) which he will submit to Parris Island base security for the purpose of vetting all attendees. Dennis Forsythe is the organizer for this walk. \nWe will meet at the Parris Island Gateway entrance just south of US Highway 21 at Malecon Drive. SUMMARY:Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area and Ecological Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Jackson\, SC\, Aiken County. Please visit their website for directions. This area is only open during designated dates and times. Meet at the gate where you will have to sign in and out. We may carpool on the property leaving the other cars in the parking area. We will drive to various areas to look for butterflies. The main roads are gravel\, the smaller roads are grass but unless you get way off the track they are in pretty good shape and are well maintained. There is a port-o-let at the gate. The nearest town is Jackson\, a mile or two from the front gate. There is a Subway there and possibly other local restaurants\, but you should probably bring lunch because the property is huge and if you get back to the areas where we’re going to be\, it can take as long as ½ hour just to get back to the gate. Intricate Satyr\, Texan Crescent and Appalachian Brown have been found at this site.

DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CLOSED!\nDue to the large response we’ve had to our upcoming walk at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve\, we would like to move our meet up location to the gravel parking lot behind the Nature Center and not the Nature Center Parking Lot. After you enter the park drive past the Nature Center parking lot to the next road and follow it to the lot behind the Nature Center. A map is attached for reference. \nDuring these walks we generally see our highest species diversity of the season.

There are no restrooms at these locations. \nBring water\, binoculars\, field guides\, sun screen\, insect repellent and lunch. \nIf you plan on staying in the vicinity for the weekend\, hotels are available in Anderson\, Clemson\, Easly\, Seneca and Walhalla.

DESCRIPTION:Date changed from Saturday\, July 13 to Sunday\, July 14 due to expected rain on July 13.\nThis is in Jackson\, SC near Aiken. Our target species are Texan Crescent and Tawny and Hackberry Emperors. We will meet at the Kathwood Lakes parking area of the Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary. We will leave some cars at this location and consolidate the number of vehicles. It is just before where the dirt road portion of Silver Bluff Road begins. It is approximately 200 yards after crossing the railroad tracks coming south on Silver Bluff Road. Kathwood Lakes is the name Google Map uses for the bodies of water at this location. The GPS coordinates are 33.337279\, -81.843453. If you are coming from the north Beech Island is the nearest place with bathrooms\, places to eat and gas stations. If coming from the south\, Jackson is the nearest place for these items. If coming from the east down Silver Bluff Road\, SC 302 Aiken will be the last town on your way. Jackson will be to your south on SC 125 if you need to stop just prior to the meeting spot. There is a possibility of butterflying at Silver Bluff Audubon Center in the afternoon.

DESCRIPTION:The field trip to this private property in Jamestown was originally scheduled for June 1\, 2019. \nJoin us this coming Saturday\, June 22\, at 10:00 am for our CBS Triad Chapter field trip to Marie Poteat’s property in Jamestown\, NC. The address is 1111 Bales Chapel Rd.\, Jamestown\, NC 27282. Pull in through the gate and park in front of the old house. Please arrive early to get parked properly. \nIf you look at the emails you receive on Triad butterfly activities\, you have seen many beautiful photos of butterflies on Marie’s property. This is our opportunity to see some of those butterflies in person. Marie has spent many years restoring native plants on her family property while eliminating invasive species. For those interested in Monarch butterflies\, she has more than 25 species of the milkweed host plants. This hard work has paid off. She probably has more butterfly species visiting and breeding on her property than any other location in Guilford County. \nIn planning for your morning outing in Jamestown\, you should be aware that there are NO restroom facilities available. Be sure to make a “pit stop” somewhere in Jamestown before continuing to the property. Bring your own water to drink\, and dress for summer weather\, including using tick protection. \nMarie would like to have some idea of how many people she should plan to accommodate. Consequently\, please contact her by early Friday evening to let her know that you’re planning to come and for last minute instructions. Keep in mind that this is a large property. DESCRIPTION:Gene Schepker would like to lead a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway specifically to find the rare Two-spotted Skipper. There should be lots of other butterflies as well. \nContact Gene for additional information. \nWe will meet at the Music Center parking lot near the office at 10:00 AM and hunt butterflies until at least mid-afternoon. The terrain is mostly level on bottom ground and is fairly easy walking. If you want to join us\, please email your cell phone number to Gene. DESCRIPTION:Please meet in the parking lot at the visitor center of Carolina Sandhills NWR. The main entrance is on US Highway 1\, about 4 miles northeast of McBee\, SC. The address is 23734 U.S. Highway 1\, McBee\, SC 29101. Our target species will be hairstreaks including Banded\, Coral and King’s. There are restroom facilities at Lake Bee\, but we will not be near there until later in the day. There are gas stations in McBee. We will drive to sections of the NWR and stop to look for butterflies. Walking will be minimal.
