NABA Butterfly Counts FAQs

What are NABA butterfly counts?
They are a one-day enumeration of butterflies that can be found in a designated 15-mile diameter circle. The results are compiled and published by the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). There is a $3/participant fee for these events payable to NABA to help defray the publishing costs.

How do you count butterflies?
A butterfly checklist is used along with field guides, and sometimes the use of a butterfly net to verify a species. All captured butterflies are released after identification.

Who can participate?
Anyone who wants to! If you are new to butterflying participating in a count is a great way to learn new species. Please check our calendar for upcoming NABA counts.
